Dance music and rave culture in the ’90s and early 2000s was a completely different world from the festival culture we know today. You weren't just going online and buying tickets from some concert website. Someone handed you a flyer, and from there, the adventure began. Figuring out where to get tickets, tracking down the location, and actually making it to the rave were all part of the experience. Sometimes you would call a random number and that number would have an address. You’d map quest your directions, print them out (don’t lose these) and head out with your friends. There was all kinds of underground music genres from jungle to house to hip hop and electro. No one called the music EDM. It was a world of new sounds and full experimentation. DJs and electronic artists curated unique sonic journeys. There were hits, but they were underground hits and the whole point of going was to hear and experience new things. The flyer was the storefront for what you were going to offer. It said a lot about the event. It was vitally important to the success of the event. Here’s a few of our favorite designs from rave flyers of this era.
